Prof. Pradeep Bhargava  (Director)

Pradeep Bhargava, Professor and Director is a professional researcher and has persued research particularly in the areas of poverty, vulnerability, education, institutions and organizations. He has also studied civil society response to various problems. He obtained his Masters and Doctoral degrees from the University of Rajasthan. He worked at South Asia Studies Centre, University of Rajasthan, the Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi and the Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur where he worked as Professor for more than ten years. He was a Mid Career Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex. He has authored and co-edited several books including Political Economy of the Gulf States, New Economic Policy and the Vulnerable Sections, Policies for Agricultural Development and Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries : Experiences from Asia and Africa and has published in various Journals. He engages in policy dialogue with Governments and interacts with Civil Society. He is presently Advisor to the Commissioners of the Supreme Court in the PUCL Case on Right to Food.

Prof. U. Kalpagam

Prof. U. Kalpagam received her Ph.D. in Economics from IIT Kanpur (1978) and a Doctor of Social Science degree in Cultural Anthropology from the Graduate Faculty, New School for Social Research, New York (1996). She has been on the faculty at IIT, Bombay and the Madras Institute of Development Studies, and has been a visiting faculty at Barnard College, Columbia University. Her research interests includes development studies, women’s studies, anthropology and history. Apart from numerous articles in national and international journals, she has published Labour & Gender: Survival in Urban India (Sage, 1994) and is finishing a book ‘Power/Knowledge in Colonial India’.

Prof. S. K. Pant

Dr. S.K. Pant received his research degree from the University of Roorkee, Roorkee in 1983. His research has been in the area of social development, environment and sanitation. He has directed a number of projects on the development problems of Uttar Pradesh and other states of the country. He has numerous publications to his credit. He has so far written four books: (1) Gender Bias in Girl Child education, Kanishka Publishers, Distributors, New Delhi, 2002 ; (2) Social Development in Rural India: Study of Uttar Pradesh, Rawat Publications, Jaipur, 2004; (3) Social Sector in India Changing Paradigm in Uttar Pradesh, Rawat Publications, Jaipur, 2005; (4) Human Development Concept, Issues and Globalisation, Rawat Publication, Jaipur, 2006. In addition he teaches two full courses on Quantitative Technique and Research Methods to the students of Business Management of the Institute. He is also the Coordinator and Key Resource Person for the course on Computer Application in Social Science data Analysis, which the Institute organises for the research students and teachers of Colleges and Universities. The programme is sponsored by India Council for Social Science Institute, New Delhi.

Prof. Bhaskar Majumder

Bhaskar Majumder is a Professor in Economics. He attained his M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from the University of Calcutta. He taught in colleges and University of Calcutta for a number of years.

He is engaged in theoretical and applied research since last three decades. He has published several research papers in referred journals of national and international repute, in addition to contributing several chapters in books on social sciences edited by experts. He has completed several research projects on food security, rural housing, food for work, utilization of fly ash, corporate social responsibility, land acquisition-led displacement, global governance sponsored by Planning Commission, World Bank, ICSSR, NTPC etc. He has published eight books so far. His areas of interst are basic needs and the poor, informal economy, international political economic relations.

Dr. Badri Narayan (Professor)

Badri Narayan is a Social Historian and Cultural Anthropologist and currently Professor at the G.B. Pant Social Science Institute, Allahabad. His wide ranging interests cover culture, memory and politics, contemporary histories, Ethnography of marginalized politics, social and anthropological history, Dalit and subaltern issues and Identity formation and the question of power. He has been a fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla (1998-99), and Visiting Fellow at the International Institute of Asian Studies, University of Leiden, The Netherlands (2002) and HGIS Fellow at the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam (2001). He was a recipient of the Fulbright Senior Fellowship (September 2005-April 2006) and the Smuts Fellowship, University of Cambridge (February 2007 – October 2007). Besides having written a number of research articles both in English and Hindi in national and international Journals, he has authored Documenting Dissent: Contesting Fables, Contested Memories and Dalit Political Discourse (2001) and Multiple Marginalities: an Anthology of Identified Dalit Writings (2004). His recent publications include Women Heroes and Dalit Assertion in North India and Fascinating Hindutva: Saffron Politics and Dalit Mobilisation published by Sage Publications, New Delhi in the year 2006 and 2009 respectively.

Dr. Govinda Chandra Rath (Associate Professor)

Dr. Govinda Chandra Rath obtained his Ph.D. (Sociology) from Calcutta University. His research is in the areas of Tribal Identity, Land Transfer, Panchayati Raj, Human Rights, Tribal Development, Tribes in Indian Politics, Tribal Leadership and Water Cosmology.

Mr. Bimal Kumar (Associate Professor)

Mr. Bimal Kumar has a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Allahabad. He has been associated with the Institute since 1981. His interest area is Economic sociology and institutional dynamics. Combining his field work experiences and knowledge of the political dynamics of the economic regions of Uttar Pradesh, he has directed and co-authored a number of research reports. He has edited the book entitled "Urbanisation and Land use Conflict at Urban Fringes". He is currently involved in major research project on Land use Plans and a DST supported project on Natural Resource Data Management and Socio-economic Development Plan for District Allahabad.

Dr. K.N. Bhatt (Associate Professor)


Dr. K.N. Bhatt is an economist by profession with several years of research experience in development, environment, educational planning and management studies. A Ph.D. from the University of Allahabad, has been working with the Institute since 1984. He has completed a number of research projects relating to education, development and environment decentralization and disaster management. He has authored several research papers, written project reports and published four books.

Dr. Sunit Singh (Associate Professor)

Dr. Sunit Singh has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Allahabad. He has completed a a number of research projects, evaluation studies targeted at rural transformation. He is very actively involved in various social action programmes which seek to organize the poorest of the poor and establishing SHGs. He has authored a book entitled " Caste Re-Configuration and U.P. Elections". Currently he is engaged in completing a book on "Organising People for Development".

Dr. A.R. Misra (Assistant Professor)

Dr. A.R. Misra is a political scientist. He obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Allahabad. Prior to joining this institute, he was at the Institute of Urban Studies, Lucknow University. His research interests include rural social change, culture and religious philosophy. He has edited Sahitya Evam Samajik Parivartan (Vani Prakashan, New Delhi). He has published in Prachy Pratibha; Journal of Art, History and Culture; Chitti Vithika, and Journal of Council of Indian Philosophical Research, Madhumati and has written many popular articles in newspapers. His recent work is ‘Multiple Marginalities authored jointly with Dr. Badri Narain and published by Manohar, New Delhi, 2004.

Dr. R.M. Tripathi (Assistant Professor)

Dr. Raj Mani Tripathi is a geographer with specialization in Population Geography. He took his ph.D. in Urban Geography from the University of Allahabad. With his interest in Social and Development Science. Presently he is closely associated with the Ageing Population and also established the International Association of Indian Society of University of Third Age (U3As). He participated in several conferences and seminars and contributed many research papers in various journals of repute.
