Prof. A. B. Lal
Tenure - 27.03.1980 - 26.03.1983
A mathematician as well as political scientist
he was never second in his academic career. He
was the Head of the Department of political
science for almost 20 years and was the
Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University. A man
of high moral rectitude, he was known for his
commitment to academic values and uncompromising
principles and was highly regarded not only by
his colleagues but also by his seniors. He had
deep interest in political philosophy, which he
taught to students many of whom have occupied
very high offices in the government. It was
under his leadership that the solid foundation
of the Institute was laid.
Prof. Nurul
Hasan
Tenure - 04.06.1983 - 12.07.1993
One of the architects of the Aligarh School of
history, he was not only a distinguished scholar
but also a distinguished diplomat who served in
the Govt. of India as Education Minister,
Ambassador to the erstwhile Soviet Union,
Chairman CSIR, Chairman UGC, and the Governor of
West Bengal. He took personal interest in
research activities of the Institute, offered
fruitful suggestions and was known for his
hospitality, approachability and concern for
members of the Institute.
Prof. S. C.
Dubey
Tenure - 29.07.1993 - 04.02.1996
He became a professor at the young age of 32 and
served as Director NIRD, Director, Institute of
Advanced Study, Shimla, Chairman ICSSR,
Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, Chairman
MPPSC and advisor to the Government of Madhya
Pradesh. A sociologist of repute, he authored
the famous book 'The Indian Village' published
by Routledge and Kegan Paul. Subsequently he
started writing in Hindi and shifted his focus
from Sociology to culture and literature. The
focus on culture in the Institute owes much to
him.
Sri Krishna Chandra Pant
Tenure - 19.04.1996 - 24.07.2008
Son of Bharat Ratna Late Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, and former Defence Minister, also has been the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and a member of Parliament, Government of India, from 1962 onwards for 26 years. He has held several portfolios in the Union Council of Ministers, which includes Defense, Finance, Home, Irrigation and Power, Energy, Steel and Mines, Heavy Engineering, Education, Science and Technology, Atomic Energy, Electronics and Space. He is the Chairman, Center for Research and Information Systems for the Non-aligned and Developing Countries and Co-chairman Indo-UK Round Table. Under his Chairmanship from 1996 onwards Institute has taken giant leaps in research, training and other allied activities. He has authored the book "India's Development Scenario: Next Decade and Beyond" which reflects his analytical insight into the present and future of India. It is largely due to his vision that the Institute has been able to narrow down the gap between theory and social action.
